I have long been intrigued by Lacan's concept of "the hysteric's demand", a demand which is not supposed to be fulfilled, since the purpose of the demand is to assert a relationship between subject and object. If the demand were to be fulfilled, it would immediately be replaced. This has been what most of the programmes of small socialist groups have looked like to me for a long time, and I've seen that as both a symptom and a condition of their powerlessness. Thank you for adding another conceptual layer to that thought.
