To her credit, Zara Sultana has publicly endorsed Amu Gib and now will be canvassing on their behalf in Islington. On the municipal-socialism argument, the Bolshevik Tendency is stronger than much of the left. The Miliband citation from Parliamentary Socialism, the Taaffe admission from Liverpool: A City That Dared to Fight about local councils remaining "subject to the laws of capitalism," and the Lenin passage on municipal socialism as bourgeois-Fabian diversionism: these are properly deployed. The Engels letter to Sorge on the Fabians is well chosen.
What the piece cannot do, and does not try to do, is think about YP as anything other than a confirmation of its prior political schema. It is flat-pack Marxism, which arrives fully formed and just needs to be erected in the imperfect environment. The headline judgment, "stillbirth," is delivered in the subhead and never genuinely tested. The analysis runs: Fabian leadership plus class-collaborationist electoral logic equals foreclosure, therefore the revolutionary task lies elsewhere. That framework cannot register what the conferences in Liverpool and Dundee actually showed: that the base is to the left of the leadership, that Team Corbyn was defeated on several key votes, and that the rank-and-file resistance to bureaucratic manoeuvre is real and generative. An alert reading holds the contradiction open: the class composition of the project remains uncertain, the Scottish organisation is attempting to constitute itself on a different basis, the expelled SWP members and the wider far left are not simply neutralised. BT collapses that into a pre-written verdict.
The polemic against the SL, the former IBT (now Bolshevik Caucus), the CPGB, the SP/TUSC, and the Grassroots Left operates at the level of sect hygiene. Useful as a roll call of who supported what in the CEC election and on the Green question, less useful as a political characterisation.
